Europe's first smartbus depot is being designed right now

I've spent this series making the case. Let me end it with facts, because the strongest case for the smart depot isn't an argument at all. It's that it's already being designed — and piloted.

Warsaw — Redutowa. Warsaw's municipal operator, MZA, runs one of the largest and most complex bus networks in Central Europe. An operational assessment of its existing depot documented the scale of the daily losses in detail — peak-hour arrival queues reaching 25 minutes, reversing manoeuvres as the primary source of incidents, drivers performing technically demanding manoeuvres at the end of fatigued shifts. That data became the design brief for Redutowa: one of the first facilities in Europe planned from the ground up for smartbus operations. It's designed for 140 autonomous-ready buses across two levels, with no conventional parking slots — every bay laid out for smartbus operation. A central control centre, run by a new role we call the Smartbus Coordinator, will oversee all vehicle movements from a screen rather than a yard. Automatic fire-evacuation routines are built into the operational design from the start. This is not a render. It's a detailed design brief for a real facility.

Warsaw and Gliwice — pilots. Early smartbus pilots in these environments indicate the approach performs reliably in defined depot settings. And there's a pattern operators notice quickly: staff acceptance tends to rise once the system is actually visible in operation. People trust what they can watch work.

Barcelona — TMB. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona operates over 1,150 buses, with its largest depot handling around 500 vehicles a day — each needing up to 20 minutes of non-revenue movements. TMB has recognised depot operations as a significant cost and inefficiency driver and is actively validating autonomous depot technology under real conditions, bringing Spanish regulatory context and Mediterranean operating conditions into the data set.

Belgium — Multiobus. A private operator subcontracting for De Lijn, running 34 electric buses alongside roughly 70 diesel vehicles, with a roadmap to fully electric within eight years. Their electric fleet is already multi-OEM — buses from several different manufacturers — procured across funding cycles. Their interest is precisely the one most operators will recognise: every electric bus they add makes the depot more complex, they're managing that complexity with manual processes today, and they want the depot they're building toward to be able to handle the fleet they're building toward. Their conclusion — start with the vehicles that are ready and expand as the fleet evolves — is how depot automation will work in practice for most operators.

And around these, a wider deployment landscape: feasibility assessments with operators across Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland, alongside the early pilots in Poland and the greenfield smart depot taking shape in Warsaw.

Here's the pattern across all of it. The operators moving now aren't the ones who waited for autonomy to be finished. They're the ones who recognised that the depot is where autonomy is already deployable, and who are starting to factor smartbus requirements into the decisions they're making anyway. The report puts it directly: operators who build smartbus requirements into their next tender are the ones positioned to deploy within the coming fleet cycle. Everyone else is positioned to wait.
